Dimethicone- is an ingredient that is silicone based, frequently found in many skin care products and makeup. It is used for its "smoothing" properties and ability to fill in uneven texture, fine lines, and pores. Dimethicone can be drying on the skin, cause irritation, allergic reactions, and acne breakouts! This stuff is basically a thin layer of rubber on your skin that keeps your skin from doing its natural thang.
GMO’s- are linked to organ damage, immune system disorders, infertility and more. GMO stands for genetically modified organisms that have been altered in a way that isn't natural i.e. mating/ recombination
Octinoxate- usually used for UVB protection but is absolutely toxic for your organs and is known to disrupt your endocrine! It is an ingredient that absorbs rapidly into the skin and can cause allergic reactions.
Parabens- are linked to cancer and there is proof that parabens are found in breast cancer patients. 85% of cosmetics have parabens so double check labels for anything ending in “-araben.” Using paraben infested products on a daily basis can increase your risk of hormone disruptions, ovarian cancer, allergic reactions, breast tumors and more. Look out for some of the most common parabens such as: methylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben.
Parabens are said to be used as a preservative, but organic products include their own natural forms of parabens such as blueberries. Parabens mimic oestrogen in the body and can be stored in the body resulting in health damage overtime.
Propylene Glycol- a small organic alcohol commonly used as a skin conditioning agent. This chemical compound is associated with skin, eye, and lung irritants with enhanced skin absorption. It is also associated with allergic contact dermatitis as well as contact urticaria in humans. Propylene glycol may cause organ system toxicity and all effects can be manifested as low as 2%!
Synonyms to look out for: -propane, -propanol, -methylethl glycol
Parfum- a mixture of various scent chemicals and ingredients used as fragrance dispersants. Parfum/Fragrance mixes have been associated with allergies, dermatitis, respiratory distress and potential effects on the reproductive system.
There are 3 very common Phalate/chemicals found in synthetic fragrances:
Di- ethyl phthalate (DEP)
Di- n- butyl phthalate (DBP)
Benzyl butyl phthalate
Synthetics- artificial material to imitate natural product
Titanium Dioxide- often used for pigment and as an ingredient in cosmetics, skin care, toothpastes, pharmaceuticals, paper, and even food. If it is nano sized, that means there is a higher chance of this carcinogen entering your pores and into your blood stream!
